The American Explorers journey begins with a 22-day summer leadership experience in Table Rock, North Carolina that is operated by North Carolina Outward Bound School (NCOBS). Each year that students return offers a new NCOBS summer excursion where leadership skills are taught in an outdoor environment. The goal at the conclusion of all summer experiences is for students to gain self-confidence, independence and responsibility.

After the completion of summer expeditions, students participate in year-round leadership development opportunities, maintaining a strong connection to the program, each other and their individual life plans.
Through a collection of year-round programs and hands-on learning experiences American Explorers learn to deepen and refine their leadership skills and put their talents to use in meaningful ways. Participation includes school and community service projects, team building exercises, advocacy, employment and internships, and health and wellness activities.
